Heritage Listed Properties

SMALL 8 swan st heritage afterMost people have heard of listed status for buildings and homes but do not understand what this really means including the plethora of rules and regulations that is laid down to protect the integrity of the property. A listed building or listed structure is one that has been placed on the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. A listed building may not be demolished, extended, or altered without special permission from the local planning authority. It is a criminal offence to carry out works to a listed building which affects its special historic or architectural interest without listed building consent having been granted prior to work commencing.

This can lead to problems when a property owner wishes to make alterations. Many believe that it is purely the alteration of a listed building that is restricted but in most cases limitations are also applied to the materials and methods used to restore or change the building too.

Enlisting the services of a company specialising in listed or heritage property is just as important as the finished product as both are part and parcel of getting the right outcome.
